New Movie: Baby John Trailer Review

The trailer of Varun Dhawan’s first proper action film Baby John has been released. The teaser of this film had already garnered tremendous buzz among the audience, and the trailer had raised hopes of taking this buzz to a new level. But does this trailer live up to the expectations? Let’s find out.

New Movie: Baby John Trailer Review

The film “Baby John” is presented by director Atlee, who recently created a stir on the big screen with Shahrukh Khan’s film “Jawaan”. Atlee is considered the king of mass cinema, and his films are a tremendous mix of style, emotion, and power-packed action. The story of the film stands against women’s crime and the father-daughter relationship is kept at the center. This subject is very sensitive and strong. Jackie Shroff will be seen in the role of the villain, which may prove to be the biggest and most challenging role of his career.

Varun Dhawan’s two different looks are seen in the trailer, but they don’t look as impressive as the two Shahrukhs in “Jawaan”. The action scenes in the trailer are strong and Varun’s fighting sequences reflect energy. However, the level of emotion is not as deep as seen in mass cinema like “Jawaan”.

Salman Khan’s glimpse at the end of the trailer surprised the audience. Just one dialogue has increased the curiosity. Salman Khan will be seen as Varun’s guru in the film. But the way he was used in Salman’s previous film “Singham 3”, the fans are a little skeptical. It is expected that Atlee will present this character of Salman in a new and powerful way.

The weakest side of “Baby John” is that it is a remake. This film is a Hindi remake of Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamil film “Theri”. The original film has already been watched by millions of viewers and has also been telecasted repeatedly on TV. In such a situation, the question arises that why would the audience go to the theater to watch it again?

In the era of OTT, remake films do not get much respect in the eyes of the audience. Recently, remake films like Shahid Kapoor’s “Jersey” and Akshay Kumar’s “Selfie” have failed miserably at the box office. In such a situation, the makers of “Baby John” will have to face this challenge.

Jackie Shroff is the biggest attraction of the trailer. The backstory and character of his villain seems to be the strongest link of the film. Bollywood has never used Jackie Shroff like this before. His character will not only keep the audience engaged, but can also take the film to a different height.

The only way to save “Baby John” is to prepare it completely for the Indian audience. The story, location and presentation will have to be changed according to the North Belt. Director Atlee has claimed that the film is only inspired by “Theri” and many changes have been made in it. If the film is adapted to the Indian context and Jackie Shroff’s character is presented strongly, then this film can do well at the box office.

The trailer is a mix of action and drama, but it does not offer anything new at the story level. Varun Dhawan’s dialogue delivery and strong action definitely impress, but the story and presentation seem weak somewhere. The best part of the trailer is Salman Khan’s entry and Jackie Shroff’s dangerous look.

“Baby John” is an ambitious film, which can breathe new life into Varun Dhawan’s career. But the burden of the film being a remake can hold it back. Bollywood now needs such films, which are original and can connect directly with the Indian audience.

The success of the film depends on how well it is presented in the Indian context and how strongly the characters of Jackie Shroff and Salman Khan are portrayed. Will “Baby John” set the box office on fire or will it prove to be another failed attempt in the series of remakes of South films? The answer to this will be found in the theatre. For now, the trailer is not as effective as the teaser, but the hopes are still alive.
