CBSE board exams 2026 big update: CBSE introduces on-screen marking for class 12 exams

CBSE board exams, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in its latest notice, has announced that it will introduce on-screen marking for the evaluation of class 12 answer books. The evaluation of class 10 answer sheets will continue in physical mode for 2026. One must be aware that the board conducts the class 10 and 12 board examinations every year in India and across 26 countries, catering to nearly 46 lakh students. The decision to move towards digital evaluation is part of the Board’s efforts to improve efficiency, transparency, accuracy, and sustainability in the examination process.

CBSE board exams, As per the board, the on-screen marking system will eliminate totaling errors and significantly reduce manual intervention. The newly introduced system will speed up the evaluation process and allow wider participation of teachers. What comes as a major relief to teachers is that they will be able to evaluate answer scripts from their own schools without travelling to examination centres. This way, the teachers will continue their regular academic duties.

Benefits of on-screen marking

CBSE stated that the shift to on-screen marking will help save time and costs associated with the transportation of answer books and reduce the manpower required for post-result verification. This will provide an opportunity for all schools to contribute to the evaluation and involvement of teachers from all affiliated schools globally.

CBSE board exams, To ensure smooth implementation, the board has asked affliated schools to ensure the availability of the required infrastructure. This includes a computer lab with a public static IP as per affiliation bye-laws, computers or laptops running Windows 8 or above with at least 4 GB RAM and sufficient free storage, updated internet browsers, Adobe Reader, reliable internet connectivity of at least 2 Mbps, and uninterrupted power supply.

CBSE board exams, The Board said it will support schools and teachers during the transition by allowing all teachers with OASIS IDs to log in and familiarise themselves with the system. CBSE will also conduct multiple dry runs, organise training programmes, establish a call centre for issue resolution and release instructional videos to help teachers understand the new evaluation process. CBSE added that detailed instructions for each activity will be issued separately to ensure timely action by all stakeholders.

CBSE board exams, To further ensure error-free evaluation, CBSE has instructed adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), issuance of fewer copies per evaluator, planned capacity building programmes, and short instructional videos for guidance.

Note: Students will answer section-wise, and evaluation will be done by subject- specific teachers.

The board has stated that the scheduled evaluation must be completed in 08-10 days (instead of 10-12 days in previous years).
